I've been digging through the archives and I realize that there are few pictures of Andy and me, none current. I'll try to rectify that someday but for now these must do.

I think this was the first bike we ever shot with Matisse, a Co-Motion-built aluminum Gran Paradiso with Wound Up fork and carbon rear. Ok, it was a long time ago.

Recently I did an interview with a writer from one of the print cycling mags - I can't say which magazine but let's just assume it rhymes with "Goad". Anyhow, we were discussing the parallels between building bicycle frames and working in restaurants, which I did for many years before my present gig. As in a restaurant, we have a menu here - we don't run "specials" as such but we happily build things that aren't actually on the menu. So maybe our current menu consists of those frames we feel the best about and fit what we do better than the other options - but occasionally it feels like we offer too many choices and something needs to go.

With these points in mind I'm thinking it makes sense to trim the Gran Paradiso menu, shedding the Spiritus and XCr options. Spirit we like because it allows us to build a nice, light steel frame, and we like the shape of the faceted tubes. At the same time, Columbus Life tubing with its cylindrical shape (and use of the same alloy as Spirit, Niobium) is calling us and it allows us to build almost as light a frame - within grams - as the Spirit. However, the tubes will be stronger/more dent-resistant given their shape and a cylinder will be easier to hold in a fixture compared to the shaped tubes.

Additionally with La Dolce Vita, as we're calling the Life-based frames, we have the option/feature of using the Chris King/Pegoretti D-11 headset. More on that here and in a future post but let's just say for now the slightly larger (+ 4-5mm) head tube allows us to get a better fit when using a 38mm down tube which is a good choice for the big guys. When a 35mm down tube is used we don't need the D-11 head tube but it will be nice to have one frame that works for almost any size rider.

With XCr stainless (similar to Reynolds 953) we have a frame that is essentially built from steel - very strong steel, but still steel. It rides like a steel frame, weighs like a steel frame, and may or may not develop surface corrosion depending on the composition of your sweat and where you live. Additionally, the tubes can be hard to come by, the stuff is a pain to cope and machine after welding, and it's difficult/impossible to repair after a crash. And once we paint it the frame ends up being within the price of a nice dinner to our titanium frame - which is lighter, stronger, and easier for us to build.

So to set the record straight I'm not hating on Spirit or XCr - we've sold several lately and they look and ride great - but as this is the beginning of a new year it seems like a good time to do some house-cleaning by narrowing our focus and reducing the inventory we need on hand. And if you really want one of these frames we'll do it - it's like going off the menu at a good restaurant. Easy as pie.

In our never-ending quest to offer as many variations on a theme as possible, we bring now to your attention our "La Dolce Vita" model. It is constructed of steel, it mates with the Enve 1.0 fork, and it sits squarely in our Gran Paradiso family. For LDV, as we call it here, we feature Columbus' Life tubing throughout with main tubes oversized at 31.8mm for the top and seat tubes, choice of 35 or 38mm down tubes, 16 or 17mm seat stays. Chain stays are Spirit and, when combined with the Enve fork, this frame will take 28mm tires just fine.

"What, Hampsten," I hear you say "is the difference between Spirit frames and those built with Life or MAX tubing?" And a good question it is, too. To me, Life sits right in between Spirit and MAX. Spirit for the light riders, MAX for us heavier guys and really, almost anyone could ride Life. So if you're thinking that MAX may be overbuilt for you but the Spirit seems a trifle thin, this is your baby. At 185# I could ride this, at 150# (dripping wet...) my brother could as well.

Furthermore, unlike MAX or Spirit, the Life tubes are completely cylidrical - meaning a round cross-section. No shaping, no squishing, nothing but pure tube-like sweet smoothness for greater torsional rigidity (and increased vertical compliance, natch).

"I had a great time yesterday at the Echelon Gran Fondo thanks in most part to you lending me your bike. Simply put, it is a flawless machine. For starters, it’s beautiful. I turned a few heads and was able to chat up the fact that you’re based here (in Seattle) to a few old timers at a rest stop and a couple of people at the start.
The frame is clean and the welds are laid down with obvious skill and a desire for perfection. And the bike is very secure - there were a few fast downhills I rode one handed so I could get some water or food and it rolled straight as an arrow.

Your spec was also perfect. I never missed a shift - you can imagine with all the up and down I was constantly going from big to small chainring and I played the rear cassette like a jazz musician doing runs on a standing bass. Even the choice of 32-spoke box section rims over something carbon and fancy is a decision I could appreciate on the ride - we hit a few rough patches of asphalt and your bike just laughed at it. I could tell you took the care to give the bike a pro-level cleaned and tuning. So thank you, thank you for letting me use it. I look forward to our spin on Tuesday."

Our first Strada Bianca MiniMAX frame is completed - because Steve needs a new winter bike - and there was much rejoicing. It's the same alloy (Niobium) as our Spirit-for-Lugs/Pegorichie tubing but with slightly shorter butts (insert joke here) and some oh-so-sexy shaping going on with the top and down tubes. We use the lightest and smallest seat tubes and seat stays that we can get away with and we spec curved chainstays for that curvy chainstay look. The Wound Up fork, painted, should pair well with this frame and the stiffness of the fork will complement the hoped-for compliance of the frame itself.

Will there be much difference in the ride of the MiniMAX frame versus that of the Spirit-tubed Strada Bianca? There should be a slightly more comfy ride, the frame will look oh-so-cool, and you'll be the first on your block.

Price? $2200 for a frame/fork using Spirit round tubes; $2300 gets you the MiniMAX. Fat tires or fenders, no problem.

And? 3 pounds six ounces before paint.

It is with great sadness today that Hampsten Cycles announced that their short-lived Crema model had expired overnight in its sleep.

"He seemed so happy," said Hampsten spokesperson Steve Hampsten "but there was always this sense that the features that made Crema Crema were not really working for him." When asked to elaborate, Hampsten offered these thoughts: "He was trying to appeal to a broader audience through lower pricing, fewer options, a sensible size chart, and with the steel fork. As it turns out, our customers don't really care about the lower pricing, they want the options, the poor size chart was mostly ignored, and the steel fork ends up costing us more in dollars and labor than a carbon fork."

When asked how he could possibly continue when his heart is so obviously broken, Hampsten voiced these final thoughts: "Moving on will be hard but we'll get through this - I think it will bring us all closer together. We're a team here, it's like a family, and we came to play and - God willing - to win this thing...ummm... what was the question again? Anyhow, everything that you liked about Crema is available in Strada Bianca form - and more - but you will pay dearly for that damn steel fork. Pictures will be up someday!"

"Cycling coverage in Colombia during the 1980s was exhaustive. The nation was absolutely mad for the sport, and the press was happy to provide the necessary content to get high ratings, and sell newspapers. Maybe you’re a big guy, like to sprint, not afraid to grab a jersey or bump an elbow, do ok on the short hills, do better on crappy descents, double espresso at the coffee stop, a beer and a brat or two after a long ride. The spring classics are what get your blood pumping, full of rain, cobbled bergs, cow shit, and rabid fans. Ghent-Bubbelghum, De Ronde van Vlaanderen, Parigi-Roubaix - now them are proper bike races. Maybe add Amstel Gold and Liege-Bastogne-Liege in a pinch and certainly the new Strada Bianca race in Tuscany.

Here at HampCo we’ve distilled our long-standing love of the Spring Classics and sketchy roads into a single frame; we call it “MAX”. Based on the famed MAX tubeset from Columbus Tubi - which Columbus has so graciously re-introduced using their top-notch Niobium tubing - we make a few tweaks to the package:

1 - We lose the lugs and BB shell. Yep, the lugs have their own appeal but we like welding Niobium and we save some weight.

2 - We drop the MAX fork. Carbon works well here for short or medium-reach calipers or we can build our own. Choose from Enve, Co-Motion Nor-Wester, or HampCo steel. We build these to work with up to 28mm tires for better cush and more traction.

3 - The swaged seat tube is awkward to weld around and we try to avoid brazed-on front der clamps so we substitute our own seat tube. This gives us the seat tube option of 28.6mm or 31.6mm - one more chance to fine-tune the ride and stiffness of the frame.

4 - Those smooshed seat stays have never looked quite right so let’s save them for that coffee-table project and we’ll use Columbus Spirit or Zona stays, 14mm, 17mm, even 19mm - single-or-double-taper - it all depends on the rider.

This leaves us with Columbus MAX 31.8mm bi-ovalized top tube, 35mm bi-ovalized down tube, 38mm tall chainstays, normal head tube. We get a frame weight here of about 3.4 pounds, unpainted, in a 55cm frame. The lack of lugs, the lighter fork, and the tubing substitutions both save weight and allow more tweaking of the end product: light and comfy or stiffer and burlier - your choice.

A friend sends this interview with Grant Petersen from Rivendell Bicycle Works. Intelligent and thoughtful answers as you would expect. I read his comments earlier about not using the word "very" in writing about his products and I've tried to avoid its use in my own writing. And then there was the entire Riv catalogue written entirely without the letter "e" - great stuff, excellent products, wonderful people.
